Overview

If you are looking for a long-lasting restoration to replace a missing tooth or teeth, our group is pleased to offer implant dentistry for patients in San Diego, CA. Dental implants are metal posts surgically placed in your gums and jawbone to simulate the missing tooth root. The post(s) can be connected to a bridge, crown, or denture for a natural-looking restoration that can be used just like your real teeth. Set up a consultation to hear more about implants at Dental Express. You may choose dental implants if you don't want to deal with loose crowns or the hassle of removable dentures. Talk to one of our skilled dentists about your preference and decide if implants are a good choice for you.

Mini Implants

At Dental Express, we also offer mini implants. For patients who do not have sufficient bone mass for regular implants or who cannot undergo multiple procedures, we might recommend mini implants. The procedure is much less invasive and patients recover faster compared to regular implants. During the procedure, we use local anesthesia and insert a titanium post that has a small ball at the end of it. After inserting the post, we will attach the denture. Following the treatment, patients will experience slight discomfort and should avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods.

Best Candidates

Dental implants can replace a missing tooth or teeth by connecting it to an implant-supported bridge, crown, or denture. Implant dentistry might be a good option if you have a dental restoration, but you are unhappy with the look, fit, or if it needs special cleaning. Patients can brush and floss implants just like normal teeth. In your consultation, we will assess the health of your jawbone and gums to decide if you are a good candidate for implant dentistry. In some cases, a gum or bone graft may be needed before implant surgery to strengthen the implant's foundation. Dental implant surgery is not a good choice if you use tobacco products, are pregnant, or are being treated for another condition, such as gum disease.

What To Expect

To prepare for your dental implants, you may need to have teeth extracted, as well as gum and bone grafts. After your mouth has healed, we will set up another appointment for the implant surgery.

Prior to receiving the implant, our dentists will administer local anesthesia to numb your mouth. If needed and to help you further relax, we can arrange additional anesthesia or sedation options. After you are completely numb, our dentists will make an incision in your gum and put the titanium post in the jawbone. The incision in the gums is closed with some of the dental implant visible above the gumline. This process is repeated if you need multiple implants. As the dental implant integrates with the bone and gum over the following months, a temporary covering is used to protect the post. Once we decide the dental implant is stable, your restoration (denture, crown, or bridge) is connected to your implant and adjusted for a proper fit.

Recovery

You may have some short-term inflammation in your gums and face, plus discomfort, bruising, and minor bleeding following your dental implant procedure. We will let you know what to expect and when to contact our office. Our dentists may also write a prescription for pain relievers and antibiotics. As soon as your implants have healed and your customized restoration has been attached, you will want to implement an at-home routine that includes brushing and flossing. Additionally, you should schedule annual exams and biannual professional cleanings at Dental Express so we can track the health of your implants and restorations. A dentist from our team will evaluate your implants or restorations and determine if you need repairs or replacements.

Insurance Coverage

Based on your dental insurance and personal coverage, some of the costs of your implants and custom restorations may be covered. We will contact your insurance company to understand your policy and determine your costs. At your consultation, we can estimate your costs and talk to you about payment methods we accept, including low-interest medical financing.
