Tooth Extractions Overview
Even though our dentists make every attempt to conserve and preserve your natural teeth, there are cases where a tooth or teeth may need to be extracted. A simple extraction removes a tooth that is visible over the gums. This is typically done for a tooth that's decayed or damaged and cannot be repaired. A surgical extraction takes out a tooth that has not erupted above the gumline. Generally, dentists perform surgical extractions to remove impacted teeth, like wisdom teeth. Regardless of the reason for having a tooth extraction, our Dental Express team will give you the best care. In addition, our San Diego, CA offices provide multiple sedation options, like nitrous oxide and oral-conscious sedation, which means you can stay comfortable during your procedure. Tooth Extractions Reviews
"I'm a critic when it comes to my dental care as I was a dental tech for 8 years, so I know the procedures. This office and its treatment and customer service is honestly the best I ever had. Dr. Marty and Teresa are the best. I will never go anywhere else and wish I would have known about them sooner.. They extracted my tooth and made me feel comfortable the whole time... Wish I could give 10 starts!!!!"- J.B. / Yelp / May 25, 2018

"They are awesome. Everyone was super nice and helpful. Dr. Casey removed my wisdom teeth, and did an incredible job. I had no pain and he removed them quickly and with ease. The office is also very nice, yet prices were affordable. I'd recommend this place to anyone!"- M.J. / Yelp / Mar 28, 2018
"I was really nervous about getting my wisdom teeth pulled, Dr. Casey was awesome! It was so quick and I felt nothing! They did a lot of calming me and explaining as they went so I could feel at ease. Brigitte was also amazing, knowledgeable, professional, and explained everything perfectly as she went. Very good experience!"- M.B. / Yelp / Nov 22, 2016
"Absolutely the best dentist to go to if dentists scare the heck out of you. My girlfriend suffers from terrible anxiety. I brought her in to get a tooth pulled, which would make anyone anxious. She was trembling from the start. Dr. Danielle, Malik, and the whole staff were extremely patient and comforting. It took 4 hours for my girlfriend to calm down and compose herself for the procedure, and not once was she ever pressured nor rushed. The actual procedure took about 20 minutes and was a success. I cannot thank everyone at Dental Express for their thoughtfulness and sincerity. So, for anyone with fears or anxiety of the dentist, this is the place for you. Thanks again Dr. Danielle, Malik, and staff. My girlfriend had a gas!"- M.H. / Yelp / Aug 10, 2019
Best Candidates for Tooth Extractions
If you have a damaged or broken tooth caused by advanced decay, we will make every effort to repair it using a crown, dental bonding, or a filling. However, if the decay is too bad, we may have to remove the tooth to prevent it from spreading to healthy teeth. You may also require a simple or surgical extraction to remove teeth that don't fit in your mouth. This includes your third molars (wisdom teeth) that grow in around ages 17 – 21. In older children, infant teeth that haven't fallen out naturally might need extraction so they don't block the permanent teeth. In addition, if you're getting orthodontics, then you might require an extraction to make room for the remaining teeth as they move into their normal place.
What To Expect with Tooth Extractions
Dental extractions are done in our office using local anesthesia to numb the area near the tooth being removed. Depending on the degree of the procedure, our dentists can use different forms of sedation to help you stay relaxed throughout the treatment. Once you are ready, we will begin the procedure. In a simple extraction, we loosen the tooth using a special device called an elevator. A surgical extraction entails making incisions into your gums to get to the tooth. If necessary, our dentists might break the tooth into smaller pieces for easier removal. After the tooth is removed, we will close the incision in your gums. Prior to a surgical extraction, we may prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.
Tooth Extractions Recovery
Depending on the anesthesia used throughout your extraction, you might need to have someone take you home. As your gums heal, you should avoid using straws, spitting, and smoking. Your recovery will vary, depending on the extent of your dental extraction, but many patients need to eat soft, cool food for at least a few days after the extraction. We will speak with you regarding what is normal as you recover and how to care for your gums. Your mouth will probably be swollen after the extraction so we suggest over-the-counter pain medicine and cold compresses. Sometimes, we may give you a prescription for pain medication and/or antibiotics. In addition to any suggested follow-up visits, you should continue to schedule appointments at Dental Express for regular exams and cleanings so we can track your health following the extraction.
Tooth Extractions Insurance Coverage
An extraction is usually covered by dental insurance, but your sedation option may not be fully covered. Before your extraction, we will contact your insurance provider to find out your specific coverage and estimate your costs. If you don't have dental insurance, then we can speak with you about different payment options or provide information about medical financing.
