Fluoride's importance to improving oral health has been documented by the American Dental Association (ADA), the WHO (World Health Organization), the AMA (American Medical Association), and many other professional organizations. Communities that add fluoride to their water supply have fewer problems with tooth decay and cavities. A natural mineral found in the earth and some foods, fluoride helps to strengthen bones and dental enamel. Professional fluoride treatments may help younger patients who have growing teeth and older patients with damaged enamel improve their oral health. Best Candidates

Professional fluoride treatments can be given to patients of all ages. Although, it's usually given to children whose teeth are developing or who have not developed good oral hygiene habits. Our dentists also recommend fluoride treatments for older patients whose drinking water is not fluoridated or who are susceptible to tooth decay. Dental Express offers different fluoride formulas if you have special needs, including neutral sodium fluoride for those with a dry mouth or acidulated phosphate fluoride for those with restorations (bridges, crowns, and dentures). We also offer a choice of flavors to make these treatments easier for all patients.

What to Expect

Fluoride treatments are typically performed every six months following your cleaning. After the cleaning, your dentist will ask you to select a flavor and will prepare the fluoride treatment as either a gel, foam, or varnish. The treatment will be kept on your teeth for several minutes to give the fluoride time to penetrate your enamel. Next, the hygienist will use suction to help remove any excess fluoride after the treatment, but you will not be able to rinse your mouth, drink, or eat for at least 30 minutes.

Nausea and vomiting can occur if you consume any fluoride; however, this should subside about a day following your treatment. In some patients, our dentists may prescribe fluoride tablets to use between treatments. Since fluoride is toxic in high doses, you should be cautious and keep supplements out of reach of children. While these treatments strengthen the teeth, you still need to follow a daily routine that includes brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing. You also need to attend your scheduled dental exams and cleanings at Dental Express so one of our dentists can reassess your need for professional fluoride treatments.

Insurance Coverage

Many insurance companies cover fluoride treatments for patients under a certain age, but adults may not be covered. Before discussing your personal costs, we work with your dental insurance to determine how much is covered. For patients without insurance, Dental Express offers different payment methods and can help you find financing if needed.
