Fluoride's importance to improving oral health has been documented by the American Dental Association (ADA), the WHO (World Health Organization), the AMA (American Medical Association), and many other professional organizations. Communities that add fluoride to their water supply have fewer problems with tooth decay and cavities. A natural mineral found in the earth and some foods, fluoride helps to strengthen bones and dental enamel. Professional fluoride treatments may help younger patients who have growing teeth and older patients with damaged enamel improve their oral health. "This place has been good so far. They are friendly and professional. Office is very clean and modern. Location is convenient if you are any where near point Loma. Ruben is an all-star extremely informative and has great communication, a pleasure to deal with. Dr Casey seems real down to earth and also easy to deal with. Overall my experience has been good and I would reccomend this spot."- J.F. / Google / Nov 13, 2019
"I have come here three times for cleanings/procedures and every time it has been excellent, everyone I have interacted with here has been 100/10. I came here yesterday to extract 4 of my wisdom teeth and I did not feel a thing, and even today I feel normal expect for the 4 holes in my mouth. I would like to thank Jamie and Melissa P. who were amazing throughout this process, and everyone else that I interacted with. I would attach a pic of my teeth (that came out super clean and in one piece) but that’s kind of gross."- P.S. / Yelp / Sep 03, 2020
"Had an appt with Lisa and she is the sweetest! Walked me through the whole process step by step as to what she was doing. Very happy with her and will always be coming back for her specifically. She made me feel so comfortable because normally I’m not a big fan of going in to the dentist in general but had a great experience with her and I’m happy with the way I look and feel now. Thanks Lisa!"- S.C. / Yelp / Sep 03, 2020

Professional fluoride treatments can be given to patients of all ages. Although, it's usually given to children whose teeth are developing or who have not developed good oral hygiene habits. Our dentists also recommend fluoride treatments for older patients whose drinking water is not fluoridated or who are susceptible to tooth decay. Dental Express offers different fluoride formulas if you have special needs, including neutral sodium fluoride for those with a dry mouth or acidulated phosphate fluoride for those with restorations (bridges, crowns, and dentures). We also offer a choice of flavors to make these treatments easier for all patients.
What to Expect
Fluoride treatments are typically performed every six months following your cleaning. After the cleaning, your dentist will ask you to select a flavor and will prepare the fluoride treatment as either a gel, foam, or varnish. The treatment will be kept on your teeth for several minutes to give the fluoride time to penetrate your enamel. Next, the hygienist will use suction to help remove any excess fluoride after the treatment, but you will not be able to rinse your mouth, drink, or eat for at least 30 minutes.
Nausea and vomiting can occur if you consume any fluoride; however, this should subside about a day following your treatment. In some patients, our dentists may prescribe fluoride tablets to use between treatments. Since fluoride is toxic in high doses, you should be cautious and keep supplements out of reach of children. While these treatments strengthen the teeth, you still need to follow a daily routine that includes brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing. You also need to attend your scheduled dental exams and cleanings at Dental Express so one of our dentists can reassess your need for professional fluoride treatments.
Many insurance companies cover fluoride treatments for patients under a certain age, but adults may not be covered. Before discussing your personal costs, we work with your dental insurance to determine how much is covered. For patients without insurance, Dental Express offers different payment methods and can help you find financing if needed.
Help make sure you and your family have healthy, strong teeth with fluoride treatments at Dental Express. Our dentists recommend fluoride treatments for younger patients with developing teeth and older patients who would like to prevent future issues.
