Fluoride Treatment Overview
Fluoride's importance to improving oral health has been documented by the American Dental Association (ADA), the WHO (World Health Organization), the AMA (American Medical Association), and many other professional organizations. Communities that add fluoride to their water supply have fewer problems with tooth decay and cavities. A natural mineral found in the earth and some foods, fluoride helps to strengthen bones and dental enamel. Professional fluoride treatments may help younger patients who have growing teeth and older patients with damaged enamel improve their oral health. "This is an awesome dental office. It’s hard to find any decent dentist that will take PPO Denti-Cal. This place is fully equipped and staffed. My old dentist always did a fine job on me until he had to change his insurance plans. But his place wasn’t even as good as this place. Bottom line, I’m glad I found this place through the help of other Yelp users!"- T.T. / Yelp / Jul 03, 2020
"First and foremost I want to thank Malik Wofford for being kind and understanding of my fear of the dentist. Malik made sure I was at ease the whole appointment. Dr. Danielle did my extractions and I didn't feel a thing. I am happy that I came here. Also a thank you to RaKenya for looking after my son for his appointment and helping Malik make adjustments to my denture. Great staff and great experience. Thank you so very much."- A.L. / Google / Jul 01, 2020
"Love this dental office. It’s beautiful, comfortable, and clean. The dentists and team work well with young people. It’s a pretty diverse team, which is important to me. They communicate very well with my teens. They speak in a way the teens feel comfortable and comprehend their dental work and upcoming expectations. I highly recommend. The teens look forward to my appointments here."- L.B. / Yelp / Jun 30, 2020
"I’ve been looking for a new dentist that takes Denti-Cal sence Western Dental had terrible service. I gave Western too many chances what incompetence! I went to Dental Express Point Loma as a new patient this afternoon. This may sound cheesy, but first impressions do make the difference. I say this because from walking into the office and being greeted by friendly staff members they know how to treat people.Dental Express Point Loma is very nice. Their lobby is gorgeous/very fancy. This place is a good size. I love the train theme. The actual mini train goes the entire building which was very entertaining. In fact the exam rooms are shaped like passenger rooms on the train. Now, the staff at the front are so warm and welcoming. Even with a mask on you could tell they’re smiling. Check-in was fast especially with the ipads. I got there at 2:40 for a 3:00 appointment and was in the exam room by 2:48. My hygienist /x-ray tech was very good she took her time. Dr. Danielle was running a bit behind, but she’s awesome.I found my new dental home."- J.M. / Yelp / Jun 19, 2020
"Very pleasant experience. Friendly and nice staff. All was done quick and painless. Same day appointment which is very convenient. No waiting time. Quick and professional."- K.L. / Google / Jun 15, 2020
Best Candidates for Fluoride Treatment
Professional fluoride treatments can be given to patients of all ages. Although, it's usually given to children whose teeth are developing or who have not developed good oral hygiene habits. Our dentists also recommend fluoride treatments for older patients whose drinking water is not fluoridated or who are susceptible to tooth decay. Dental Express offers different fluoride formulas if you have special needs, including neutral sodium fluoride for those with a dry mouth or acidulated phosphate fluoride for those with restorations (bridges, crowns, and dentures). We also offer a choice of flavors to make these treatments easier for all patients.
What to Expect with Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride treatments are typically performed every six months following your cleaning. After the cleaning, your dentist will ask you to select a flavor and will prepare the fluoride treatment as either a gel, foam, or varnish. The treatment will be kept on your teeth for several minutes to give the fluoride time to penetrate your enamel. Next, the hygienist will use suction to help remove any excess fluoride after the treatment, but you will not be able to rinse your mouth, drink, or eat for at least 30 minutes.
Fluoride Treatment Follow-Up
Nausea and vomiting can occur if you consume any fluoride; however, this should subside about a day following your treatment. In some patients, our dentists may prescribe fluoride tablets to use between treatments. Since fluoride is toxic in high doses, you should be cautious and keep supplements out of reach of children. While these treatments strengthen the teeth, you still need to follow a daily routine that includes brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing. You also need to attend your scheduled dental exams and cleanings at Dental Express so one of our dentists can reassess your need for professional fluoride treatments.
Fluoride Treatment Insurance Coverage
Many insurance companies cover fluoride treatments for patients under a certain age, but adults may not be covered. Before discussing your personal costs, we work with your dental insurance to determine how much is covered. For patients without insurance, Dental Express offers different payment methods and can help you find financing if needed.
