Overview

If tooth decay were Superman, then fluoride would be kryptonite. The American Dental Association (ADA), the WHO (World Health Organization), the AMA (American Medical Association), and many other professional organizations have all documented the profound effect this naturally-occurring mineral has on our dental health.

Studies conducted by the ADA found that when the right amount of fluoride is added to a community's water supply, it can prevent at least 25% of tooth decay in children and adults. Additionally, as opposed to regular toothpaste, fluoride toothpaste has the added benefit of strengthening your enamel and reducing plaque growth.

Professional fluoride treatments use more concentrated levels of fluoride to prevent tooth decay and cavities. They help younger patients who have growing teeth and older patients with damaged enamel improve their oral health. Educating our patients is one of our top priorities at Dental Express. Best Candidates

Fluoride treatments are most effective for patients who are especially vulnerable to tooth decay and cavities. Although these treatments can be given to patients of all ages, they're usually given to children with developing teeth who haven't developed good oral hygiene habits yet. Starting preventive fluoride treatments at a young age can help build a solid foundation of oral health for your little one and prevent the development of dental issues. This proactive approach to dental care will keep your child's teeth strong and healthy while saving you money in the long run.

Our dentists also recommend fluoride treatments for older patients whose drinking water is not fluoridated or are susceptible to tooth decay. As at-home dental care becomes more challenging with age, fluoride treatments are an excellent way of keeping tooth decay and cavities at bay.

Dental Express offers different fluoride formulas if you have special needs, including neutral sodium fluoride for those with a dry mouth or acidulated phosphate fluoride for those with restorations (bridges, crowns, and dentures).

What to Expect

Fluoride treatments at Dental Express are quick and easy and are typically performed every six months following your cleaning. We offer a variety of flavors to make the process more enjoyable for you and your kids. After the cleaning, your dentist will ask you to select a flavor and will prepare the fluoride treatment as either a gel, foam, or varnish. The treatment will be kept on your teeth for several minutes to give the fluoride time to penetrate your enamel. Next, the hygienist will use suction to help remove any excess fluoride after the treatment, but you will not be able to rinse your mouth, drink, or eat for at least 30 minutes. The enamel-reinforcing effect of fluoride treatments not only reverses early-stage tooth decay, but it also makes your teeth more resistant to plaque development. Think of these treatments like lifting weights for your teeth.

Follow-Up

Since fluoride treatments usually occur twice a year at your regular checkups, your follow-up should take place six months after your last cleaning. If you're more susceptible to tooth decay, whether because you don't have access to fluoridated water or other complications, your dentist may recommend more frequent treatments.

Nausea and vomiting can occur if you consume any fluoride; however, this should subside about a day following your treatment. In some patients, our dentists may prescribe fluoride tablets to use between treatments. Since fluoride is toxic in high doses, you should be cautious and keep supplements out of reach of children. While these treatments strengthen the teeth, you still need to follow a daily routine that includes brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing. You also need to attend your scheduled dental exams and cleanings at Dental Express, so one of our dentists can reassess your need for professional fluoride treatments.

Insurance Coverage

Many insurance companies cover fluoride treatments for patients under a certain age, but adults may not be covered. Before discussing your personal costs, we work with your dental insurance to determine how much is covered. For patients without insurance, Dental Express offers different payment methods and can help you find financing if needed.
