Overview

When detected early, tooth decay is addressed with a standard dental filling or something similar to clean the enamel and seal the area. But when the decay expands beyond the outer tooth and infects the inner pulp of the tooth, you will likely need a root canal. Also called endodontic treatment or root canal therapy, our dentists will remove the damaged pulp from the tooth, clean the cavity, and fill the tooth. Our dentists at Dental Express recommend root canal therapy to patients because it not only treats the infected tooth, but it keeps the decay from spreading to other teeth (creating a larger issue).

Though root canals are a common dental treatment, patients often put off going to the dentist for a toothache because of anxiety and fear. Our team will do their best to make sure you feel relaxed and comfortable. To do this, we provide sedation for anxiety. Call one of our San Diego, CA offices for more information about root canal therapy or to arrange a consultation.

Best Candidates

An infection in the pulp of a tooth may be caused by a severe crack or deep cavity in the tooth. Common signs that you might have an infection include tooth pain, jaw pain, swollen and discolored gums, and changes in the color of the tooth. If the infection is not addressed, the pain and swelling will increase as the infection spreads to the rest of the mouth. Schedule an appointment at Dental Express if you feel or see any changes in your mouth. If you have fears or anxieties about going to the dentist, please ask us about sedation options to help you remain calm and at ease during your exam and treatment.

What To Expect

Prior to the procedure, your anesthetic/sedation options will be discussed with one of our dentists. We do not want you to feel nervous, anxious, or scared during your appointment. Some individuals request nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral-conscious sedation to undergo a root canal. We are very understanding of dental anxieties and will help you make the appropriate decision on how to proceed.

During an endodontic procedure, our team will assess the inner chamber of your tooth and then carefully remove the infected pulp. Afterward, the inner chamber is meticulously cleaned to eliminate any leftover debris. Once it is cleaned, the tooth is filled with a special material to seal and protect it.

Recovery

Depending on the type of sedation that you chose, you may need to have a responsible adult drive you home following your appointment. You should expect your mouth to feel sensitive or swollen, but these symptoms are minor and can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers. We ask that you schedule a follow-up six months after your root canal. Our team will check to determine if the infection has been controlled and that your mouth has healed. Afterward, you should continue to schedule annual dental exams and biannual cleanings to maintain your oral health.

Insurance Coverage

During your consultation, we will go over cost estimates to align your treatments with your health needs and your budget. If you have dental insurance, we will speak with your provider to figure out your benefits. If you don't have dental insurance, Dental Express takes a number of payment methods and may be able to assist you in finding low-interest medical financing.
