N2O is a very popular sedation technique and is used with little risk on adults and children. Before nitrous oxide gas is used, we will assess your medical history, current medications, and concerns to ensure nitrous oxide gas is a good choice for you. N2O sedation may be utilized for advanced or routine procedures in conjunction with local anesthesia to help minimize potential pain. Additionally, nitrous oxide sedation can be used to ease dental anxieties or fears that prevent you from keeping your regular dental appointments. Nitrous oxide gas might not be right for you if you have extreme phobias, trouble breathing through your nose, have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other similar health concerns.
What To Expect
Before the procedure begins, the N2O is administered via a nasal hood. As you inhale the gas, it will quickly act and begin taking effect. One of our dentists will observe your response to the gas, as well as your vitals, and adjust the amount as needed throughout the appointment so you stay relaxed. You should expect tingling in your arms and legs, as well as a feeling of well-being, warmth, and euphoria as the gas begins to take effect. Nitrous oxide is normally used alongside a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine to numb your mouth. When the procedure is done, the gas is turned off and the effects will begin to fade immediately.
Recovery from N2O sedation is typically immediate as the medication is eliminated from the body within 3 – 5 minutes. You will be ready to drive and return to your normal activities when you leave our facility. Side effects are uncommon, but you might experience headaches, chills, sweating, nausea, vomiting, or fatigue. Do not hesitate to call our team if you have any side effects that last longer than a few days. To decrease the risk of nausea, our dentists suggest eating a light meal prior to your procedure and avoiding a big meal for three hours after your appointment.
If you have dental insurance, our team will contact your carrier to obtain any potential coverage and benefits in regards to nitrous oxide sedation. This information will help us determine your expected costs prior to your procedure. If you do not carry dental insurance, Dental Express takes several forms of payment, including medical financing to help make your procedure more affordable.
