Dr. Jamie Ferguson, San Diego DentistDr. Jamie Ferguson

Dr. Jamie’s path to becoming a dentist was non-traditional to say the least. Before attending dental school, he spent nearly 10 years serving in the United States Navy Submarine Service as a Sonar Technician. During this time, he completed multiple deployments onboard nuclear powered fast-attack submarines; he’s also a veteran of Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Dr. Jamie completed his undergraduate degree at San Diego State University. He received his dental training at one of the top dental schools in the country: the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco, California. He is a graduate of the Class of 2003.

Dr. Jamie is married to his wife of 25 years and has three sons. In his free time, he loves BBQ-ing; in fact, his bucket list includes taking a Whiskey / BBQ tour around America some day! But for now, he’s content to experiment with new BBQ techniques at home and watch Burgers, Brew & Que on the Food Network.

Dr, Jamie is a member of the San Diego County Dental Society, the California Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. He is Chief of Academic Affairs for California Dental Certifications, a San Diego-based dental assistant training program. Dr. Jamie is also a volunteer lecturer for the San Diego State Pre-Dental program.

You can take the dentist out of California, but you can’t take California out of the dentist.

Dr. Michelle is a huge fan of the Golden State. Originally from Redondo Beach, she completed her undergraduate degree from the University of California at San Diego. She received her dental training from the UCLA School of Dentistry.

For her general dentistry residency, Dr. Michelle traveled to the East Coast where she worked at a trauma 1 center in New York City. Naturally, she helped a great deal of emergency dental patients. Dr. Rachel Ryu, San Diego DentistDr. Rachel Ryu

It may come as a surprise to learn that when she was a child, Dr. Ryu was once afraid of going to the dentist. This gives her a special understanding and empathy for those who are also anxious about dental exams.

“When I was in college and no longer forced by my parents to go to my dental appointments, I was afraid that I would start missing my appointments out of fear and laziness,” she said. “I knew that would lead to dental problems, so I thought ‘why not become a dentist so I can be on top of my dental health?’ It was almost a way of overcoming my fears.”

Dr. Ryu has lived all over the globe. She was born in South Korea, lived in England for 2 years, and then lived in Germany for 4 years until 4th grade, then moved back to Korea. She moved to Seattle when she was in middle school and she has called the U.S. home ever since.

Dr. Ryu earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and completed dental school at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

“I love so many things about being a dentist,” she said. “I like the problem-solving aspect of dentistry. Each treatment plan will be different dependent on the patient’s need, dental history, etc. It’s like a little puzzle. I also like thinking of ways to help my patients be comfortable in the dental chair since I know what it’s like to be an anxious patient!”
Away from the office, she enjoys going to concerts and hiking. She also has an artistic flair: she paints portraits of her friend’s pets as gifts. She is also a regular volunteer at the UCSD free dental clinic.

Dr. Abdelrazeq Marabeh, San Diego DentistDr. Abdelrazeq Marabeh

Dr. Marabeh was meant to be a dentist. But meant to experience the snow and ice of New York winters? Not so much.

This San Diego native got his taste of New York when he went to NYU for dental school. He also completed an additional year of surgical and dental training at a residency at a level 1 trauma center in New York City. While it was great to experience “four seasons” for a few years, Dr. Marbeh missed the call of the sandy beaches and sea vistas.

“I realized I only wanted to experience two seasons from now on and came back home to San Diego,” he said. “Turns out I wasn’t built for the cold, and who wants to see trees change color when you can look at the big blue ocean?!”

We’re glad he returned to his native city and even more excited that he is a member of our Dental Express family!

“I became a dentist because I could not see myself doing anything else,” he said. “I enjoy working with my hands and helping people smile, and I have great pride in my work.”

He grew up in North County and is a product of the Poway Unified School district.

“I love going deep sea fishing,” he said. “Growing up I loved body surfing at Del Mar beach and surf fishing the different beaches and even Lake Poway. Today, I still love to do those things.”

Dr. Pooja Patel, San Diego DentistDr. Pooja Patel

Dr. Pooja Patel has been interested in dentistry since she was a child, when she was introduced to the profession by her uncle, who owns a dental practice in New York.
“I was intrigued by what he did for a living and when it came time to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I decided to shadow my general dentist in high school,” she said. “I felt dentistry suited me well. It is a career that is at times challenging but very rewarding. It allows me to be an artist by working with my hands and I get to build meaningful relationships with my patients, which is very important to me!”

A native of St. Louis, MO, Dr. Patel earned her undergraduate degree from St. Louis University and completed dental school at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Dentistry.
She married her college sweetheart in 2016. He’s currently a surgical resident at UCSD. Louie, an adorable fluffy white goldendoodle, is a greatly loved member of their immediate family.
Dr. Patel admits that while she does miss the Midwest, she’s grateful that she and her husband have started their life together in beautiful and sunny San Diego.

“One of my most favorite things about being a dentist is being able to meet new people and build meaningful relationships with my patients. Most people don’t like the dentist due to bad experiences or anxiety/fear and it is my goal and greatest achievement for me to change that for my patients,” Dr. Patel said. “I also love to work with my hands! Dentistry is an art and I love being able to be a perfectionist with my work.”

Away from the office, she enjoys cooking and trying different recipes and exploring new restaurants. You may also find it interesting to know that Dr. Patel is a professional Bharatanatyam South Indian classical dancer.

“I started learning Bharatanatyam at the age of 6 and graduated from the school Dances of India in 2005 after performing a three-hour on-stage performance alongside my sister in front of all of our family and friends,” she says. “Although I don’t perform anymore, dancing is something I truly enjoy for fun!”

We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Patel to our practice.
