MEET DR. AIKO KONDO
Clairemont
Dr. Kondo’s career has taken her all over the world, from university in Ohio to doing research in Kyoto, Japan. Wanting to pursue her passion to help people suffering from pain, she returned to the US to become a dentist – despite the initial protests of her parents! Dr. Kondo knows that many people have anxiety about visiting the dentist, so she aspires to make all of her patients’ experiences as comfortable and positive as possible. She works with her patients to develop individualized plans that best suit their personal needs and goals.
When not at the office, Dr. Kondo enjoys trying new restaurants, catching up on her latest shows, and spending time with her husband and new baby boy.
Why did you become a dentist?
Before I became a dentist, I worked in a research lab, and spent my whole day sitting at a desk in front of a computer. I realized that I needed more personal interaction in my everyday life, and I love meeting people and helping them with their problems. It is the most rewarding feeling to give people that have anxiety about coming to the dentist a comfortable and positive experience. And I have so much fun doing it!
Where did you go to dental school?
I was born in Japan but moved around all over the world with my dad’s work. We eventually ended up on the East Coast! I mostly grew up in Ohio and come back to dental school at Case Western Reserve University to be close to my family. But my dream has always been to live in California, and luckily for me, my husband grew up in San Diego, so it’s like having a second family here!
What is your favorite part of your dental practice?
I love the sense of camaraderie and teamwork that we have in our office. The other doctors I work alongside are always available, and it’s nice to be able to collaborate and bounce things off of each other. And I love the staff here too, everyone is so nice, and good at what they do!
What are your passions outside of dentistry?
My newest passion has been being a mom to my 6-month-old baby and watching his milestones. I also enjoy playing the piano. I spent much of my childhood playing the piano and performed at the Carnegie Hall when I was in high school. I love spending time outdoors exploring the warm San Diego climate. My husband and I are fledgling foodies as well and have been trying to explore all of the trendy restaurants in town.
How do you help cultivate the Dental Express team?
All of our staff, from the dentists and dental assistants to the front desk, work together as a team. We all have our different responsibilities to keep the office running. Our assistants have a lot of different tasks and things that they can do to help us. I think that’s part of why they enjoy their time at our office too—they aren’t just doing menial labor all day—they’re scanning for us, and making temporary crowns, and the front desk does so much to support us too. We all have our own special roles here!
What would you say is the highlight of your career?
The highlight of being a dentist is helping people, I have so much fun! I’m always trying to stay up to date on the latest procedures and techniques for the best possible dental care. There’s nothing that makes me feel better than putting someone who is suffering out of pain after just a few minutes in my chair.
Of Dental Express’ five core values (integrity, empathy, adaptability, collaboration, and whistle while you work) which do you feel is the most valuable to you as a dentist?
Whistle while you work. I feel like I cultivate that the most. Our practice can get busy, and it can get kind of stressful at times. Keeping a positive attitude and trying to have fun makes the whole day just more enjoyable. And most importantly, it’s important for the team to maintain an upbeat and positive atmosphere for patients on what’s already likely a stressful day.
What is your greatest challenge working as a dentist?
Before having a baby, I used to work full time, but once I got pregnant, I had to completely change the way I approached things. I had to prioritize my body and my health. My life has changed even more since becoming a mom, and it’s been a challenge to balance my new responsibilities at home with those in the office.
Who is your hero?
My dad—his work ethic, discipline, and drive. He’s not here with us anymore. I learned a lot watching him own his own business. He is my inspiration.
